Treatment of Acne

Acne Treatment

Acne is a very common problem seen in practise. It affects all age groups starting from children from the age of eight years onwards to adults in age group of 50 to 60 years. The causes would vary from hormonal to life style changes and pollution. The treatment is important to prevent the sequelae of acne in the form of pigmentation and scars.

The treatment would be directed towards the cause and would involve medications, dietary advice, life style modifications, applications and procedures like comedone expression, chemical peels, microneedling and laser treatment.

Phototherapy for Psoriasis & Vitiligo

Phototherapy consists of using ultraviolet (UV) light along with oral or topical medication to induce cure in the condition. The source of UV light may be either sunlight (PUVASOL) or Phototherapy unit.

The treatment is usually advised two to three times a week. The UV light used may be either UVA or UVB.

Hairfall Treatment

The treatment for hair fall consists of two parts. One is to find out the cause of hair fall. This would include examination of the scalp / body, blood investigations for deficiencies, hormonal imbalance and in selected cases scalp biopsy.

The treatment part of the hair fall would be to correct the abnormalities detected in investigations. Therapy given in the form of oral medications, injectables, mesotherapy and microneedling. This would vary from case to case.
In patients with male pattern baldness who are not responding to medical line of treatment, they have the option of undergoing Hair Transplantation.

This procedure is done under local anesthesia .The hair follicles are redistributed from the back of the scalp to the areas with scanty hair. The technique used is FUE.

Pigmentation Treatment

This can be subdivided into treatment for hyper pigmentation (darkening) and hypo/depigmentation (light colored spots). The patient would be examined under a special UV lamp, undergo blood investigations and skin biopsy if required. Treatment would depend on the cause and would include oral and topical medications. Chemical peels, Laser toning, Phototherapy and Mesotherapy may also be considered in selected cases.

In patients with vitiligo (leucoderm) who have not responded to medical treatment and phototherapy , they have the option of undergoing Miniature Punch Grafting. This is a surgical procedure done under local anesthesia. Small 1.5 to 2mm grafts are placed in the patch . Post surgery the grafts help in giving color to the entire patch.

Botox & Fillers

Botox is the most popular wrinkle reduction treatment. It is a simple non-surgical procedure that smoothens the dynamic facial lines by relaxing the tiny facial muscles that cause them.

The effect lasts for 4 to 6 months. Dermal fillers restore volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial static wrinkles and folds like nasolabial. Also used for lip augmentation and scars. The effect lasts for 8 to 12 months. Botox and Fillers can be done in the same sitting.

Chemical Peels

This is use of chemicals on the face or body areas for the treatment of hyper pigmentation, superficial scars, dull skin, active acne, open pores and to improve skin tone.

The peels used are Glycolic acid, AHA peels, Salicylic acid peels, TCA, and various combination peels. The peels are usually done at 15 to 20 day intervals.

Signs of ageing are more evident on face due to environmental factors, hormonal changes, deficiencies, unhealthy life style and intrinsic ageing.

Skin rejuvenation consists of noninvasive to minimally invasive treatments to reduce the imperfections. This would include the use of various modalities like Lasers, Botox, Fillers, Micro needling, Microdermabrasion and peels along with oral and topical medications.

The use of combination of procedures is highly successful.

Laser Hair Reduction (LHR)

This is a very popular procedure done using Long pulsed Nd-Yag laser which is suited for Indian skin. All areas of the body can be treated to get rid of unwanted hair.

Usually multiple sittings are required at 4 to 6 week intervals. It’s usually done without any anaesthesia. However in a patient with low pain threshold it can be done under topical anaesthesia.

Laser Tattoo Removal

Q switched Nd- Yag laser is used for tattoo removal under topical anesthesia. The light energy from the laser breaks the tattoo ink particles into very minute particles which can be cleared by the body.

Multiple sittings are required at 4 to 6 week intervals. Tattoo’s with any color be treated.

Laser Treatment of Scars

This treatment is used for scars following acne , chickenpox , surgical and stretch marks. Fractional CO2 laser is used for this treatment.

This is done under topical anaesthesia and multiple sittings are required at intervals of 4 to 6 weeks.

The acne scars treatment may be combined with other modalities like laser toning, chemical peels and microdermabrasion.

Treatment of Birth Marks

The common birth marks seen in practise include naevus of ota, beckers naevus, pigmented hairy naevus and vascular ones like port wine stain.

These are treated using lasers under topical anaesthesia.

Usually multiple sittings are required at interval of 6 to 8 weeks.
