Laser hair reduction is one of the most common cosmetic procedure done. Lasers induce a long term hair reduction and not permanent hair removal.

How does Laser hair reduction work?

The laser beams highly concentrated light into the hair follicles. The pigment in the hair follicles absorbs the light. This destroys the hair follicle. The laser works only on hair in the.
Growing phase and hence the need of several sittings as all the hair are never in the growing phase at the same time.

What areas can be treated?

The laser can remove hair from all parts of the body -- the face , legs , arms , underarms ,chest, back, bikini line and other areas.

Are any investigations required?

The hair growth in females in areas of male pattern is usually due to hormonal imbalance. It is very important to rule out hormonal imbalance and correct it if present. This ensures better results with the laser.

How many sittings are required?

On an average six to eight sittings are required at interval of 4 weeks. It depends on the
hair thickness and the hair growth cycle. At any given time only a certain percentage of hair
are in the growing phase. The other hairs would enter the growth phase at different times.

Does the laser treatment hurt?

The laser cools and soothes as it glides along the skin. When the pulse of light is delivered,
Some patients experience a mild pinching or stinging sensation. No local anesthesia is usually required. However in a patient who is not comfortable, topical anesthesia may be used.

What are the post procedure instructions?

There is little redness immediately after the treatment. Usually cold compresses are given to reduce the redness and swelling if any. Sunscreens and moisturisers to be used. The treated hair would fall off within 3 to 5 days .

Are than any side effects and what can be done to prevent them?

In trained hands, the chances of side effects are practically nil. A patch test can be done for sensitive skin. One should avoid tanning to cut down the risk of side effects. The instructions given post procedure should be followed properly. The documented side effects include post laser burns, scarring and pigmentation.

What results should one expect of the treatment?

There is transformation of the terminal hair (coarse thick hair) to vellus hair (soft fine hair).
The quality, density and the rate of growth of the hair would change. The hair would get finer,
lighter and the density would reduce . The growth will also be very slow. The laser does not work on white hair.


What is a fractional laser system?

In a fractional laser system, only a fraction of the skin is exposed to the laser beam. There are areas of treated skin alternating with areas of untreated skin.

What is the advantage of a fractional laser over a conventional laser?

In a conventional laser system the entire area of skin is treated with the laser beam. As a result of this the healing takes a longer time. The down time is more. In a fractional laser system only a part of the skin is treated with the laser beam. There are areas of normal skin in between the treated areas. These areas of normal skin help in faster healing with little down time.

How does fractional co2 laser Work?

Collagen is the main protein that keeps skin looking young and line free. Over time sun exposure, pollution and the natural process of aging destroys collagen therefore increasing wrinkles. The CO2 fractional treatment laser uses light energy to create multiple microscopic wounds in the skin. When these wounds heal, it leads to new collagen formation by the body and reducing wrinkles, fine lines, stretch marks and scars.

Is the treatment painful?

Usually a numbing cream is applied 2 hours prior to the procedure. With this the skin gets numb and usually no pain is experienced.

How many sittings are required?

For acne scars 4 to 6 sittings are required at intervals of 4 to 8 weeks. For stretch marks and facial rejuvenation 3 to 5 sittings are required at intervals of 4 to 6 weeks.

What does one experience post procedure?

There is redness of the skin which may last for 2 to 5 days. Mild burning sensation for a day or so.The skin gets dry, dark and peels off over 2 to 4 days.

What are post procedure instructions?

Immediately after the procedure cold compresses are given to reduce the burning sensation. Moisturising cream along with an antibiotics cream are applied. This is followed by application of a sunscreen. At home the patient is advised to clean the area with cold water and a mild cleanser. The Moisturiser, Antibiotic Cream and Sunscreen to be applied round the clock till the skin has peeled of. Oral Antibiotics are given for 5 days.

What results can one expect?

There is improvement in the skin texture and complexion. The scars and the stretch marks get better with every sitting. There is reduction in the fine lines.

There is reduction of laxity of skin. The remodeling of tissue continues for a period of 4 to 6 months after the procedure. The final results are appreciated 6 to 9 months after a series of sittings.

Are there any complications?

The procedure if done using proper laser parameters and with proper post procedure care, the chances of complication are minimum. There can be secondary infection .The redness can persist for a longer time. These are manageable.In patients with darker complexion, there is a possibility of post procedure Hyper Pigmentation. With proper care this can be managed.
